Every six months, through an open call for the International Visitors Programme, Het Nieuwe Instituut offers cultural organisations in the Netherlands the opportunity to apply for a financial contribution in order to host an international guest in the Netherlands. These visits are intended to stimulate international exchange and awareness of Dutch design in the broadest sense, encompassing architecture, urban planning, (multidisciplinary) design and digital culture. From September up until December 2020, cultural organisations based in the Netherlands can submit applications for a grant of up to €2,500 (excluding VAT) to facilitate such a visit.
The disruptions to international air travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic are also affecting the ability to host international guests. Het Nieuwe Instituut aims to continue supporting cultural organisations in the Netherlands in exchanging knowledge with international partners: these exchanges are valuable to the cultural sector. We have therefore adapted our International Visitors Programme in order to respond to changing needs in these uncertain times.
In addition to the possibility of applying for a contribution towards the travel and residency costs of a physical visit to the Netherlands by one or more international guests, it is also possible to apply for a contribution towards the costs of a digital visitors programme. This could include setting up online meetings with the international guest(s), a discussion with a group of international colleagues or an online presentation by one or more guests to a larger audience. The underlying criterion remains that the programme facilitates international knowledge exchange and expands the Dutch design network in the Netherlands.
From September up until December 2020, cultural organisations and educational organisations based in the Netherlands can submit applications for a grant of up to €2,500 (excluding VAT) to facilitate such a visit. The application must be submitted by email at least two weeks before the programme is scheduled to take place. All applications will be processed within two weeks. The programme must take place in 2020. If the activity is cancelled in 2020, the grant will be cancelled as well. Costs that have already been incurred can be reimbursed. A maximum grant of €2,500 can be awarded per organisation in 2020.
Applicants are requested to send a brief description of their intention to apply to Kim Bouvy at email@example.com, after which the application form and conditions will be sent digitally.
Who can apply?
Cultural organisations based in the Netherlands. Educational organisations are eligible if the visit benefits a specific activity that is demonstrably outside of the regular curriculum and is accessible to the public. Foreign organisations and embassies cannot apply.
About the International Visitors Programme
Every year, dozens of international professionals visit the Netherlands through Het Nieuwe Instituut's International Visitors Programme. Within this programme, Het Nieuwe Instituut invites visitors to the Netherlands. In addition, specific guests are invited at the request of Dutch embassies abroad, and, through the open call, Het Nieuwe Instituut offers cultural institutions in the Netherlands the opportunity to create a visitors programme of their own.The International Visitor Programme is made possible by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The International Visitors Programme has been disrupted by Covid-19: scheduled visits have been cancelled, and new visits cannot be planned. Het Nieuwe Instituut therefore started developing a format for a digital visitors programme in April. The first pilot has now been successfully completed and evaluated and the format will be further developed in the coming period. Het Nieuwe Instituut sees the current situation as an incentive to develop a more sustainable format for visitor programmes that both minimises the movement of people and optimises remote encounters: an urgent design task in which the value of the human experience remains central.
If you have any questions about the possibilities of this scheme, please contact the programme manager of the International Visitors Programme, Kim Bouvy, at firstname.lastname@example.org or +31 (0) 6 83 21 69 21.
